About Miss Allison
Hi and welcome to Piano Expressions! My name is Allison Herring. My students call me Miss Allison. I started taking piano lessons at the age of 7 and immediately aspired to be just like my first piano teacher. She was fun and creative, she encouraged me to play a variety of music and kept me challenged as I rapidly progressed, and she instilled within me a lifelong love for music and teaching. I attended the University of Indianapolis initially as a double major in Music and Nursing, but ultimately graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Piano Performance. I like to joke that passion trumped practicality!

During my college years I started playing piano as a church accompanist at Saint Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, where I remained active as a pianist and organist for twelve years. I played with the children’s choir, the adult choir, and the ensemble, which was a small group of singers and instrumentalists. This provided me with awesome opportunities to collaborate with other musicians and make strong connections.

Upon graduating in 2012, I started teaching for both the International Talent Academy and Make a Joyful Noise Studio. My experience with them included teaching private in-home lessons as well as private lessons at the Primrose preschools, and instructing group music classes at the Monon Community Center. During those years I fostered many special relationships with my students and their family members, but the commute was taking time away from my own growing family. In 2018 I started Piano Expressions LLC in Brownsburg, IN. This transition allowed me to continue teaching in-home lessons, but closer to my home to better serve my family’s needs. In the summer of 2024 I eagerly opened my own studio space where all of my lessons are now taught.
As a teacher, I recognize that not all students learn the same way, so I approach each lesson with adaptability, ready to make adjustments to ensure that each student is understanding and enjoying what they’re learning. I have experience teaching students with a variety of learning challenges including dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADD, ADHD, anxiety, depression, autism, down syndrome, and blindness. I enjoy the process of connecting with my students and discovering what works best for their learning style, despite any obstacles. My greatest joy comes from guiding and monitoring each student’s progress. It might take weeks or even months to learn a certain piece, but when students master a difficult skill, it is so rewarding to see their confidence shine!

When I am not teaching I can often be found enjoying movement. I am a 200-hour certified yoga teacher and prioritize a regular yoga practice. I also love running and like to keep myself challenged and conditioned by running a few half marathons each year. My spirit thrives on inspiration found in nature, hiking, and traveling with my husband and three boys. All of my boys are active in sports, so we are often on the go to the soccer fields, the ice rink, or the basketball courts. When we’re not rushing somewhere, we all enjoy cooking meals together and eating while we watch movies, or sitting together around the firepit while we share funny stories.
Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your child’s musical development! It is a privilege to share my passion with others and I hope to leave an inspiring impression on each one of my students.
